Our Strategic Vision

Since 2001, we have made great strides in our strategic operations. At that time, we hired our first full-time staff, and began board rotations. As we've evolved, we've restructured our projects and programs.

Working under our Board-Led Strategic Plan and Vision Statement, the Back Country Land Trust is now working purposefully from Viejas Mountain in Alpine to Potrero along the international border to protect critical community resources, encourage preservation of our food supply, and add to existing conservation lands that will expand wildlife linkages and make our watersheds whole.

Our ten year vision includes completing Wright's Field and establishing a long-term lands management program, creating a network of small organic farms in East County, and assisting the local and wildlife agencies in accomplishing their land conservation goals, including partnering with the County of San Diego to create and implement an East County MSCP Sub-Area Plan.

BCLT's top five goals for the next ten years are:

  1. Own and Manage +375 acres in the Wright's Field MSCP Preserve as a public-private demonstration project for managing cultural and biological resources.
  2. Encourage appropriate human uses such as hiking, non-motorized bicycling, horseback riding, and other trail-based activities linking Wright's Field to a larger, County-wide trails system.
  3. Establish a network of 1-5 acre organic farms in East County.
  4. Protect lands critical to existing open space linkages to assist agencies and other entities with East County conservation efforts.
  5. Establish a science-based management plan for lands preserved, emphasizing interdisciplinary education and inter-generational learning experiences.

The tools we need to accomplish our strategic objectives are great. As we grow, so too will our base of volunteers, supporters, and advisors. With the expansion of our capacity will come a broader base of community support and an increase in the numbers and personalities of individuals, families, communities, and businesses that support this ever-important conservation of San Diego 's rural heritage.
